There are two main types of compounding pharmacies in the U.S.: 503A and 503B.
503A Pharmacies: Made Just for You
• Every prescription is custom-made for a single patient.
• A doctor must write a prescription specifically for you.
• Great for personal, unique needs. Medications are often adjusted to remove allergens, change strengths, or make them easier to take (like turning a pill into a liquid).
503B Pharmacies: Prepared in Advance
A 503B pharmacy is more like a mini pharmaceutical factory. Instead of making one prescription at a time, they make larger batches of medicine in advance.
• They don’t need a prescription for each individual patient. Made in batches for many patients.
• Great for ready-to-use, standardized medications
• Hospitals, clinics, and sometimes pharmacies order from them.
Ellie MD – the telehealth company that I am partnered with uses 503A compounding pharmacies
